The start of the construction of the new Wolverton Health Centre has been marked with a turf cutting ceremony.
Senior Partner for Wolverton Health Centre, Dr Saleem Mushtaq, now former chairman of Milton Keynes PCT, Will Pope, and associate director for NHS Property Services, Michael Daly, oversaw the ceremony last Thursday.
Representatives from staff at Wolverton Health Centre, Milton Keynes Community Health Services, Healthwatch, Mansells construction and NHS Milton Keynes Commissioning Group also attended.
Dr Mushtaq said: “I am so pleased that this day is finally here.
“It is a pleasure to break the ground for the building of the new Health Centre for the people of Wolverton.”
NHS Milton Keynes Clinical Commissioning Group, working with GPs and staff at Wolverton Health Centre, secured approval from the former Strategic Health Authority to go ahead with plans for a new centre in October 2012.
Local Improvement Finance Trusts invested around £2.3m for the new health centre in Wolverton to replace the old building with a new modern health facility.
Mr Pope said: “A new health centre for Wolverton has been in the planning for around 10 years – this small piece of ‘turf’ is hugely significant for the quality improvements that we expect the new health centre to bring for the people of Wolverton”
During the construction phase there will be limited parking on site, but the health centre will be open for business as usual. The new health centre will be built next to the original health centre, which will be demolished once the new one opens.
