Helping families to stay together

An innovative scheme to help families stay together is proving a success in Milton Keynes.

The Family Drug and Alcohol Court (FDAC) deals with care proceedings when parental substance misuse causes harm to children.

The MK and Bucks FDAC was one of the first of its kind outside of London and started hearing cases last July 2014.

The problem-solving approach helps parents stabilise or stop using drugs or alcohol and, where possible, keep families together.

A specialist team working with other services focusing on substance misuse, physical and mental health, children’s needs, relationships with children and other family members, parenting and issues of domestic violence. FDAC also aims to offer a parent mentor to support families. This is a volunteer with previous personal experience of substance misuse.

So far it has helped to
support eight families, and has proved such a success that the Department for Education has announced the creation of a further eight FDACs across the country.
