A man died desperately trying to stop his home burning to the ground, police believe.

The man, who is in his 60s, was unconscious when he was pulled out from the burning building in Fishermead Boulevard.

Paramedics worked hard to resuscitate him, but he sadly died.

It is believed the victim was trying to extinguish the flames which had engulfed his kitchen at around 11pm last night.

Fire officers say the fire was started by overheated oil in a chip pan.

Firefighters saved a woman who had suffered a minor injury from the flames.

An investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the fire, but police do not believe it to be suspicious.

Det Sgt Phil Turner-Robson said: “We have attended the property with the fire service again this morning as part of our investigation.

“It appears that the fire began in the kitchen and the man may have tried to extinguish it. At this stage the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

“Our thoughts are with his family at this time.”
