Patients with cardiac conditions at Great Ormond Street Hospital are benefiting from improved ward facilities thanks to the staff and customers of city company Towergate Insurance.

Along with other Towergate offices, Milton Keynes broker Towergate Insurance has been part of the team which has helped raise £161,000 to fund two single bed isolation rooms in the Cardiac General Ward of the Wolfson Heart and Lung Centre. The centre is within the new Morgan Stanley Clinical Building, the first part of the Mittal Children’s Medical Centre, an important element of Great Ormond Street Hospital’s major redevelopment plan to ensure patients receive world-class care in 21st century facilities.

Joe Thelwell, Managing Director of Towergate in Milton Keynes said: “We have long been supporters of Great Ormond Street Hospital and seen firsthand the incredible work the hospital does. We feel proud to have been able to help the hospital in their much needed redevelopment to improve the facilities for patients in the cardiac ward.”

Great Ormond Street Hospital is the largest centre for children with heart problems in the UK and one of the largest centres for children’s heart transplants in the world. Patients will now benefit from improved specialised inpatient care, with areas of expertise including heart disease, tracheal disorders, pulmonary hypertension and heart and lung transplants.

The ward contains 24 beds including high dependency beds for children who have just left the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. The new ward offers more space and en suite facilities providing more privacy and comfort for patients and their families.

Tim Johnson from Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, comments: “We would like to thank Towergate for their generous funding of two single bed isolation rooms in the Cardiac General Ward at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Thanks to their support in making the cardiac ward possible we are now able to provide our world-class care to patients in more comfortable, spacious and appropriate facilities, offering the dignity and privacy the children and their families deserve. Towergate Insurance’s generosity will make a real difference.”

Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity is now focused on raising £45 million to complete the Mittal Children’s Medical Centre. Due to open in 2016, the next new clinical building will complete the hospital’s vision to provide modern facilities for all inpatients, where a parent or carer can stay comfortably by their bedside. It will also enable them to keep up with the growing demand for services and provide world-class care to more children.
