Lens hear it for the girls

CONTINUING their unbroken record of bringing brilliant music related art exhibitions to the fore, Bedford-based gallery Rock City Art is back with another this week.

Doors open on Saturday for She-Bop-a-Lula, which highlights the talent of women performers as well as being a showcase for women photographers.

Every one of the 50 plus pictures figuring on the gallery walls have been taken by a female snapper, and feature some of those iconic, interesting and simply ga-ga girls that have shook the world of music.

To that end, you’ll find images of late greats including Dusty Springfield, Janis Joplin, Nina Simone, Billie Holliday and Amy Winehouse, alongside contemporary stars like Adele and Lady Ga Ga.

If we are talking about women in music, it simply wouldn’t be any kind of show if Madonna didn’t feature, and so she does, sitting pretty along with Jessie J, Kylie, Annie Lennox, Debbie Harry, Siouxsie Sioux and the inimitable Grace Jones.

She-Bop-a-Lula mixes candid and backstage scenes with sensitive and stylised portraits and show plenty of divas working it in the live arena.

Curated by Dede Millar, the exhibition is free to peruse right the way through to March 7.
