£1m facility would offer sport for all

PLANS for a new £1 million sports facility which will include a FIFA standard football pitch, have been described as a exciting development for the city.

The proposal, still at a very early stage, would be paid for with section 106 funds totalling £1,145,000 received from Network Rail after it bought land owned by the National Hockey Stadium to build its new headquarters.

Council leader Andrew Geary said: “When we lost the National Hockey Stadium we needed a pitch of equal or better quality. This is a development we can afford to build and it has been regulated to overcome Sport England’s concerns with the loss of a good sporting facility.

“It will be very accessible to all and I think it’s exciting for the city.”

The plans for the site, which could include Padel tennis courts and a bar area, are on display at Central Milton Keynes Railway station, Midsummer Place and thecentre:mk. There is also a display at the city library.

The deadline for comments is Monday, after which the council will look at replies before seeking planning permission.

Paul Sanders, assistant director for community facilities, said: “There is a clear and identified need for a facility of this type in Central Milton Keynes and a location like this would not only serve the CMK residents and workers, but it would meet a borough and potentially a region wide demand too.”
