A new lease of life for the over 55s

People allowed chance to stay fit in Extracare villages

Over 55s moving into the planned second ExtraCare retirement village can look forward to a new lease of life – and the chance to get into

good shape.

Those living in the existing village at Lovat Fields relish working out in the gym.

And there have been some amazing fightbacks to better health for many

working out under the expert eye of inhouse fitness instructor Pauline Smith.

She tells of resident Rita who joined her gym last year having been in a wheelchair for over two years following a stroke.

"Three sessions a week have seen dramatic improvements because Rita

transferred from a walking frame to a walking stick and is now walking independently."

Another stroke victim – Ken – had got back to playing bowls again and a third – Paul – was now working out on the cycling machine.

"Christine couldn't walk but regained her balance and Karen hit her target losing three stone," adds wonder worker Pauline.

"I also have members from the village and community who exercise to maintain their involvement in active hobbies.

"Ultimately, I don't see any condition as limiting – if you can breathe you can exercise.

"I'm astounded at how people – especially those with lifelimiting health issues and frailty – show such courage and determination."

A fully-equipped gym will be a feature of the Shenley Wood village for which a 1.2 million public appeal will be launched next year.
