Aha! New role is truly triffic move for Tim

City man lands job with Steve Coogan

The man responsible for the iconic Have I Got News For You opening sequence is making news himself – after becoming a director at Steve Coogan's production company.

In a move that will see him working with the biggest names in cult comedy, Old Stratford-based Tim Searle is joining Baby Cow, the company that has made hits like Gavin & Stacey, Saxondale and The Mighty Boosh.

In doing so he will be leaving Triffic Films – the Stony Stratford firm he founded – and the creative talent behind many animations including 2DTV and George Michael's Shoot the Dog video.

But while he rubs shoulders with the bigwigs of TV, 44-year-old Tim says he will remain a champion of Milton Keynes.

"I'm a product of the city," said Tim.

"My parents moved here in 1973 and I went to Stantonbury before going to university and then setting up Triffic soon after.

"When I'm in London I do find myself explaining about Milton Keynes but I like to think I've done my little bit to put it on the map."

In the 20 years Triffic has been running, Tim has seen many changes to technology impacting the animation industry – and has met many legends in his field.

"One of my greatest idols is Bob Godfrey, who made Roobarb and Custard and Henry's Cat, and was awarded an MBE for his work.

"He visited Triffic so I took him for bangers and mash at the Cock Hotel in Stony Stratford. He said there are a lot of people in the industry who don't necessarily have real talent, but he told me, 'Tim, you get it'.

Even The Simpsons creator Matt Groening is a fan of Triffic, having sent Tim a hand-drawn cartoon. But Tim himself says there are other names to watch out for – and they come from Triffic itself.

"The team will still be busy working and I'd like to thank them and tell the people of Milton Keynes and further afield to look out for Luke Robinson, Andy Dawson and Tim Fancourt."
