TORY candidate Anthony Stansfeld has been elected as Thames Valley’s first Police and Crime Commissioner.

He beat Labour’s Tim Starkey on second preference votes after neither candidate managed to get 50 per cent of votes in the first round.

In all Mr Stansfeld polled 76,011 votes in the first count, and 18,277 in the second to give him a total of 94,238 votes.

Nearest rival Mr Stakey won 56,631 votes in the first count, and 13,772 in the second; a total of 70,403.

Mr Stansfeld will take up the job from November 22. The Police Authority will cease to exisit from 11.59pm on Wednesday, November 21.

At midnight, all police staff employed by the Authority will transfer to the commissioner.

The PCC will indicate a proposed budget and precept for 2013–2014 in December, and a Police and Crime Plan will be published by March 2013.

Chief Constable Sara Thornton said: “I would like to congratulate Mr Stansfeld on his election victory and look forward to working together on behalf of the people in the Thames Valley.”

The results was marred by a meagre 13.3 per cent turnout across Thames Valley. The same percentage of people voted in the Milton Keynes area.

The low turnout was slammed by Labour parliamentary spokesman Andrew Pakes.

And one former Thames Valley Police Office, Maurice Collins – who served for 30 years on the force – said: “Let’s be clear more than 86 per cent have not turned out to vote and the truth is more than 14 per cent of the population care about policing.

“Something has gone terribly wrong. There are no winners here. The truth is the winner is going to go in with about five per cent of the population vote.

“The Government have got to be accountable for the poor turnout.”
