Anyone for badminton? Tickets go on sale

Milton Keynes is getting ready to host the English National Badminton Championships earlier next year.

The prestigious competition is coming to the city for the very first time in February and tickets are now on sale.

The best players from all over the country will descend on the arena:mk on February 8 and 9 – making it a landmark occasion for Milton Keynes.

Badminton England, the sport’s governing body, has long called the city home, but the 2014 competition will be its debut in Milton Keynes since it started in 1964.

For the past nine years the championships have been held in Manchester.

The annual event provides the opportunity for people to watch the best badminton players in the country fight it out for their chance to be crowned champion.

London 2012 Olympian and Commonwealth silver medallist Rajiv Ouseph will target a seventh consecutive National singles title at the arena, next to stadium:mk in Bletchley, while married mixed doubles pair Chris and Gabby Adcock will be hoping to show why they are worthy of their top five world ranking.

“We’re really looking forward to the Nationals arriving in our home in Milton Keynes in February at the fantastic arena,” said Adrian Christy, chief executive of Badminton England.

“It will add to the terrific sport already on offer in the city while strengthening our partnerships with MK Council and MK Dons FC.

“Milton Keynes is a real hotbed for badminton and I hope that fans from within the city and elsewhere will come along to support the very best of English talent.”

MK Dons FC chairman Pete Winkelman said: “It is a real honour to be hosting the National Badminton Championships at the new arena at stadium:mk and I am sure Milton Keynes will welcome the opportunity to see the best Badminton players in the country competing on a national stage.”
