Battle continues over Primark plans for thecentre:mk
Protestors for Xplain outside the Civic Offices
PROTESTORS campaigning against the proposed Primark in thecentre:mk gathered outside the Civic Offices today as they delivered their 1,212th letter of objection to the plans.
Members of city protest group Xplain, led by Linda Inoki, have been campaigning against the plans which would see the new 90,000 sq-ft three-storey store built at the expense of Secklow Gate bridge.
Retail chiefs are convinced the development is vital to unlocking the potential of Central Milton Keynes.
But Xplain believe it would destroy the city centre’s much-loved grid road system and market.
A planning application has been submitted to Milton Keynes Council for councillors to decide – hence today’s protest.
The 1,212th letter was delivered symbolically on December 12 or 12/12.
It also co-incided with the opening of a new Primark store at the MK1 Shopping Park.
Mrs Inoki said: “We were delivering our 1,212th individual letter of objection and these are from informed members of the public who want to put on record their views and objections.
“We are not against Primark or any new leisure or shopping facilities, we just want developers to leave the infrastructure alone and keep the grid intact. We could go from grid city to grid lock in five years and that could put people off visiting the city at all.”
Head of marketing at thecentre:mk, Melanie Beck, said: “We are aware there was a protest today and we respect the right of people to do so.
“We are comfortable with the over 9,000 signatures we received from people who are pro the development.”
