PARENTS are being warned to be extra vigilant when thinking about booking cut price ‘stretch limousines’ for their children.

This time of year is popular for parents getting in early to hire these types of vehicles to ferry students to events such as the end of summer term school prom.

But licensing officers from Milton Keynes Council are warning that whilst about a number of unlicensed ‘stretch limos’ operating in the area, and the risk they aren’t actually legally insured to carry passengers in this fashion, or even that some of them could be unsafe on the roads.

They are concerned that:

Some of these vehicles are neither licensed by Milton Keynes Council authority or the Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA).

They often use vehicles & drivers which are unlicensed by the appropriate licensing authority.

There is a risk these vehicles may not be legally insured to carry passengers for hire and reward.

The vehicles are unlikely to have been tested on a regular basis and may be unfit for use on the road.

There is no guarantee that the drivers have been fully vetted e.g.: a criminal record (CRB) check.

A council licensing spokesman said: “Parents want to give their children a night to remember – and let’s face it, we all like to arrive in style at a venue.

“Many of the rogue companies will offer a huge reduction in costs and normally work cash only.

But don’t put yourself in danger, please check that the stretch limo company is a genuine, professional licensed operation.”

The council is requesting that potential users of stretch limousines check with the licensing team or VOSA with to confirm whether the company, drivers and vehicles are legally licensed.

If in doubt please contact Milton Keynes Council Taxi Licensing on 01908 252860 or e-mail
