Big profits spell bumper pay day for store staff
Bonus for John Lewis staff
More than 800 staff at John Lewis in Central Milton Keynes will pick up a bonus of around eight weeks' pay following the announcement of massive profits.
The store chain has seen pre-tax profits rise 9.7 per cent to 306.6 million.
Milton Keynes branch managing director Paul Hunt praised staff for their "fantastic efforts."
But he added: "While trade is currently showing good momentum against very weak sales at this time last year, we are still cautious about the year ahead and expect it to be challenging."
He said heavy snow at the start of last year and the recession had an impact.
Customers were reluctant to buy expensive items. But trade improved over the last quarter with excellent results over Christmas.
John Lewis chairman Charlie Mayfield said he was delighted the staff – known as partners – would receive bonuses of 15 per cent of their salary.
Tony Peppiatt-Righelato, who works in the menswear department at CMK, said he and his partner had just redecorated their lounge in Vivienne Westwood Union Jack wallpaper and the bonus would go towards paying for that and buying some Union Jack cushions to match.
