Brain tumour campaign hits huge milestone

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, say Shenley Wood-based Brain Tumour Research.

The charity launched a Manifesto for Change e-petition last August. It closed last week with an incredible 118,000 signatures.

Once a petition goes over 100,000 signatures it will considered for debate in the House of Commons.

The charity is calling for national investment in brain tumour research to be increased to between £30,million and £35,million. This would bring it in line with funding for other cancers.

Pushing for the change is Bletchley mum Helen Legh, who is a broadcaster on BBC Three Counties Radio.

Helen has an aggressive brain tumour and was given 14 months to live last year. She has a five-year-old daughter, Matilda.

Helen said: “I’m delighted that the petition has passed 100,00 signatures. Now I look forward to our voices being heard in the corridors of power. One day we will find a cure for this cruel disease.”

Hugh Adams from Brain Tumour Research said the e-petition was a great example of democracy in action.

“The tremendous response is an indication of just how many families are touched by brain tumours,” he said.
