City drivers urged to THINK CYCLIST

More city drivers are noticing cyclists on our roads according to a new poll.
The Department for Transport’s THINK! campaign has found that 25 per cent of UK adults are noticing more cyclists on the road after our cycling summer of success. With the ‘Wiggins Effect’ putting more people on the road, staying safe is a priority.
Milton Keynes is considered ideal for cyclists with its Redway network which allows travel across the city without the need to go on the grid roads where vehicles can be travelling at 70mph.
Although cyclists have the option to use the grid roads, the Redways provide a safer alternative where cars and cycles don’t come into contact with each other except where a Redway crosses a road and the THINK CYCLIST! Campaign should also apply there.
Councillor John Bint, Cabinet member for Transport and Highways said “With the clocks going back on Sunday 28th October it means that we are entering the annual period of dark mornings and evenings in the rush hour period and being safe and being seen are as important as ever. Using Redways is a safe, quick and more enjoyable option for cyclists to get about the city especially during peak times however there will be some cyclists who prefer to use the roads and it is vital that all road users think twice about other vehicles using the road when they are on it”
Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond said: “We take the issue of cycle safety extremely seriously so we are launching ‘THINK CYCLIST’, a campaign aimed at both cyclists and drivers.
“With interest in cycling heightened by Bradley Wiggins winning the Tour de France and our cyclists’ extraordinary success at the Olympics and Paralympics too, we want to remind cyclists and drivers of the importance of looking out for each other to avoid accidents.”
