City plea to end Hazara persecution

The city’s 380-strong Hazara community is pleading for people to help put an end to the persecution of their relatives in Pakistan.

Many families in Milton Keynes are mourning brothers, sisters and even parents who were among the 200 killed in two recent bombings.

But they are too scared to go back home to attend the funerals, said city spokesman Mokhtar Ali this week.

“It is so horrible. We all send money home to Pakistan to help families who suffer after they lose their breadwinner. We are campaigning for the British government to help stop the persecution.”

City MPs Mark Lancaster and Ian Stewart are supporting the campaign and arranged for members of the MK community to meet government ministers Alistair Burt and Baroness Warsi. They describe the MK Hazaras as a “community full of warmth.”

Since 1999 more than 1,300 Hazaras have been killed because they are minority Shiite Muslims.

Last month a bomb in Quetta killed 94 people, mostly women and children.
