City's final chance to bring World Cup here
Dons chairman says MK's bid is too good to be ignored
On the day Milton Keynes hands in its final submission in a bid to become a World Cup Host City, Pete Winkelman admits the city is an outsider but has put together a package that can't be ignored.
The Dons chairman was part of the MK 2018 consortium that travelled to Wembley this morning to submit a final claim to the FA outlining why Milton Keynes should be chosen as a World Cup venue if England wins the right to host the 2018 event.
It comes after six months of relentless campaigning in an effort to prove the city is capable of hosting the biggest sporting competition in the world.
MK is competing alongside 14 other cities including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield, Leeds and Liverpool.
Mr Winkelman admits the city might not have the footballing history to compete with such heavyweights, but has plenty of other positives.
He said: "I think we have to go in as outsiders and I think we have always accepted that.
"But we've had two FA visits and I think we did a really good job with those and at the end of the day we are a very interesting city.
"We are new, we have got a chance to do things with low carbon living, the electric cars, our redways and gridroads can be host city highways, we're in a great location, we've got Campbell Park and the National Bowl for fan fest sites.
"We've got some great infrastructure here and that gives us a real chance."
Dr Ann Limb, chairman of the MK 2018 consortium, said: "Many people thought we were underdogs at the beginning of our campaign.
"But we have proven there are many strong reasons why Milton Keynes should be successful."
