CITY Territorial Army members demonstrated their skills of persuasion when they were chosen to help with a national advertising campaign.

The local soldiers demonstrated their training and spoke about their experiences as part of a ground breaking bid to encourage more people to join up.

The campaign, called TA Live, centres around a one-minute long television advertisement which will be screened over the next two weekends.

The first of its kind for the military, the ad shows live links to TA soldiers helping out on the front line in Afghanistan alongside their regular army counterparts.

Reservists from the 7th Battalion the Rifles, who are based at the TA centre in Blakelands, were among uniformed representatives from all over the south east chosen to take part in the promotion of the campaign.

They travelled to Gunwharf Quays at Portsmouth on Saturday to chat to hundreds of members of public visiting the TA Live stand.

The unit will also be holding its own promotion event at Blakelands in April, but has invited anybody interested in the meantime to pop along any Tuesday evening between 7.45pm and 9pm.

Nationally the TA plans to increase its membership to 30,000 by 2018. The current recruitment campaign will continue over the next 12 months.

Said Major General Munro, who is deputy commander of land forces: “There has never been an advertising campaign like this. TA Live is an incredibly exciting opportunity to bring the TA to life and show just what a TA soldier does on the ground.”
