City 'Wolfman' in danger of fatal beating

Serious concerns about welfare of homeless Big Issue seller

The city's 'wolfman' has been so badly beaten up that he has been forced to abandon his usual Big Issue pitch this week.

The colourful character, known for his leopardskin jacket and MK Dons scarf, has been sleeping rough in Central Milton Keynes for the past couple of years.

Answering only to the name of Wolfie, he stands near Waitrose every day, appearing at the crack of dawn, to sell his Big Issue magazines.

He sleeps in a secret 'lair' close to the covered market and openly admits to drinking 14 cans of lager a day.

One Waitrose worker said: "He likes a drink but he's always polite and no trouble to anyone."

But over the weekend Wolfie was set upon by a gang of thugs – the latest in a series of beatings.

One concerned well-wisher said: "They had beaten him around the head and broken his glasses.

"I have very serious concerns about his welfare and health. I am afraid the next attack might be fatal."

Wolfie, an avid MK Dons fan, has always been a regular visitor to the stadium, where fans even clubbed together to buy him a season ticket.

But this year he has been absent from the terraces because of problems with his pelvis and spine.

"It's really deteriorating," he told the Citizen in March.

"I am still standing – I just can't jump around with the kids or run round the terraces and that is why I don't go."

He urged people not to judge him because of his drinking and the fact that, in his words, he "smells a bit".

"You can't please everybody. I wasn't upset about what some people said but come and talk to me first before judging me."

Throughout the summer Wolfie has been seen several times with cuts and black eyes and complained of people beating him up.

Now his sympathisers are urging the authorities to find him a proper place to sleep to prevent more attacks.

"He said he likes to live rough but he needs somewhere safe for a while so that he can recuperate from the injuries he has suffered," said one.
