An awards ceremony will recognise and celebrate the community spirit in an area criticised in a social atlas report on Milton Keynes.
The Chairs Awards, organised by Woughton Community Council, will recognise unsung heroes, carers, good friends, young achievers and community supporters in the area.
June Harrison, who lives in Beanhill, highlighted in the report as one of the worst places to live, has been nominated in the Community Support and Unsung Hero categories.
She runs a volunteer group on the estate organising social events for people of all ages.
She said: “I was a bit shocked but it was a lovely surprise to get the invites. I wouldn’t have classified myself as an unsung hero.”
June is happy that the awards will help turn around the recent negative press Beanhill has received.
She said: “I don’t agree with the negative press, we’ve got such a great community spirit. We all show each other support as there are a lot of volunteer groups in the area.
“My volunteer group covers Woughton and friends and family are allowed to come along as well.”
The awards night will be held at the Moorlands Centre in Beanhill on March 14.
