Council to stay with weekly refuse collection

Fortnightly rubbish rounds rejected

There will be no switch to fortnightly refuse collection in the city.

All parties on Milton Keynes Council re-affirmed their commitment to weekly rounds at a meeting on Tuesday.

Council leader Councillor Sam Crooks urged them to register "unequivocal opposition" to fortnightly collection.

Government watchdog the Audit Commission has said that local authorities have a choice on frequency, but suggested they should give weekly collections consideration.

The Government is under pressure to reduce public spending.

Milton Keynes councillors worry that longer intervals between collections will lead to increased risk of vermin and streets strewn with litter.
