Milton Keynes Council has formally approved the appointment of Muriel Scott as Director of Public Health for the city.

The appointment is also supported by the Regional Director of Public Health, Dr Rashmi Shukla.

Following the transfer of Public Health to the local authority in April 2013, Mrs Scott was appointed in a temporary role to cover the position, in addition to her existing role as Director of Public Health for two neighbouring authorities, Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire Councils.

Mrs Scott said: “I welcome the opportunities and challenges ahead, and I’m looking forward to supporting the people in Milton Keynes to make healthy choices and live healthy lifestyles.”

Cabinet member responsible for health, Councillor Debbie Brock, said: “This is good news for Milton Keynes. Muriel has already had a positive impact since joining the authority, and fulfils her role to great effect.”

A nurse by profession, Mrs Scott began her career in acute hospital care, and before working with the Bedfordshire councils as Director of Public Health, she worked in Public Health in Essex.

She has also worked in Bangladesh setting up a community health development programme.
