A 96-year-old woman had her leg saved after emergency surgery at Milton Keynes Hospital.

Heather Sedgwick from Newport Pagnell had an accident with her walking frame on January 26 and the pain and swelling caused her carers to call an ambulance just before midnight.

When she arrived at hospital, her leg was completely white and she had no feeling in it. Orthopaedic consultant and hospital Medical director, Mr Martin Wetherill, who performed the emergency surgery around 3am the next morning.

Mrs Sedgwick’s son, Paul, said: “She’s been having problems with her leg and her circulation for a long time. The swelling from the accident must have just closed things down. She was taken to theatre about 3am, and got the specialist attention she needed.

“It’s good the leg will survive. Without her leg she wouldn’t have been able to manage at home.

“It is also good to see the commitment that’s been shown. Although she is 96, no-one has written her off. Her condition is well controlled with drugs and the specialist back-up here at the hospital is working. She can enjoy spending time with the children and grandchildren. She’s a survivor.”
