Double murder charge man dead at Woodhill

A MAN accused of murdering the mother and father of a police officer has been found hanging in his cell at Woodhill Prison.

Lithuanian-born Rimvydas Liorancas was on remand after being charged with the murders of Avtar and Carole Kolar in Birmingham last month.

The bodies of couple were discovered by their policeman son, Jason.

It is believed the deaths were not connected with Jason’s occupation and the couple had been killed during a bungled burglary.

Mr Kolar, 62, and his 58-year-old wife had been married for 40 years.

Liorancas was arrested on January 16 in Birmingham following a manhunt. Last week he appeared in court for an initial hearing and listened to proceedings via an interpreter.

He spoke only to confirm his name.

He was remanded to stay at Woodhill, a Category A prison.

It is understood officers at the prison did not consider him at risk of self-harm or suicide.

Liorancas was found hanging in his cell at 8.52 on Saturday.

Staff attempted resuscitation but he was pronounced dead at 9.30am.

As with all suicides on prison premises, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will now investigate the death.
