A consultation into the proposed changes to the Council Tax Reduction scheme for 2015/16 opened today, with residents and community support groups being asked to give their views.

The council agreed in 2013 that the current scheme would run for two years and that each year would consider whether to change the scheme. Last year there were no changes.

Proposed changes to the working age scheme include:

• Increasing the amount a single disabled person can earn before their Council Tax Reduction is affected.

• Increasing the amount of Council Tax Reduction that can be claimed for certain groups of people such as war pensioners, the terminally ill, young people leaving care and those with mental health issues.

• Changes that keep the scheme in line with other benefits.

• Changes that make the Council Tax Reduction easier to claim.

Consultation will close October 23 and responses will be considered before the Cabinet makes a final decision on the scheme November 26.

Councillor Robert Middleton, Cabinet member responsible for finance, said: “We are keen to hear our customers and partners views on the proposed scheme, and encourage people to respond to the consultation.

“If anyone wants to provide feedback to me personally, I welcome that – my door is always open.”

Residents can respond to the consultation in a variety of ways:
