Growth levy money sends warm glow through city homes
People will be helped to save on their energy bills
Developers have chipped in the first instalment of a total of 3 million they will contribute through the Milton Keynes Tariff to help people save on their energy bills as the city grows.
The 79,000 payment into the city's Carbon Offset Fund follows completion of the new John Lewis distribution centre at Magna Park.
The carbon fund enables those living in older properties to boost energy efficiency through subsidised loft and cavity wall insulation.
Chief executive of Milton Keynes Partnership John Lewis said money paid into the fund as a result of building in the expansion area would help many people save energy.
"Once again Milton Keynes is demonstrating that it is taking a pioneering approach to encourage low carbon living."
Don Morgan, planning director of Magna Park developer Gazeley, said: "We were the first company to pay the new planning tariff and it is very satisfying to see this money now being put to good use by making some existing homes more energy efficient."
MK Council cabinet member for growth, Councillor Mike Galloway, said: "This is great news for Milton Keynes.
"The carbon offset fund gives more residents the opportunity to directly benefit from the area's development."
