Gym'll fix it for new careers in fitness industry

Premier Training offering people a new start

People looking to start careers in health and fitness are being given the opportunity thanks to Premier Training.

The 10-week courses, run from the National Badminton Centre in Loughton, train people to become gym instructors or personal trainers.

Master trainer and centre manager Tyrone Matthews said: "I get a massive buzz from helping send good quality personal trainers and gym

instructors into the industry and our aim is to educate and enthuse as many people as possible."

The first three weeks of the Premier course gives people the qualifications needed to become a gym instructor. Once this part of the course has been completed students move on to the next seven weeks where

they learn the fundamentals and the skills needed to construct a basic fitness programme.

At the end of each sector students perform a practical assessment as well as a written examination.

In the second part of the course this involves students having their own

client and teaching them safe and effective techniques using the state of the art gym facilities.

They then undergo written exams on subjects like nutrition, bones in the body, types of joints, nervous systems and energy systems.

Charlie Green, 19, who has just started the course, said: "I have been going to the gym for three years and didn't think it was something I could make a career out of but it's something I would really enjoy.

"Hopefully I can come back here later and finish the last seven weeks for the extra qualifications."

Mel Hubbold, 21, is working through the whole 10-week course. She said: "I only got into fitness recently and I like seeing my body getting fitter as I work.

"This seemed like a logical step. The industry hasn't been hit hard by the recession and there are opportunities for us when we finish."
