Harriet Harman to visit MK today

Harriet Harman MP, Labour’s Deputy Leader, will be in Milton Keynes today to meet young volunteers collecting for MK Foodbank as part of the Big Little Give week.

Harriet will be joining Andrew Pakes, Labour Parliamentary Spokesman for Milton Keynes South, for a day of campaigning and speaking to supporters in Bletchley.

Harriet will also be joining young volunteers to hear more about their work to help MK Foodbank on the first day of the Big Little Give campaign week that runs from March 2 to March 10.

MK Foodbank will also be holding a collection at the MK Dons Stadium before the match today, and Andrew is fasting tomorrow to help raise money for the Big Little Give campaign – www.justgiving.com/andrewpakes

Leading charity The Trussell Trust estimates that it will feed 230,000 people through its network of foodbanks across the country, nearly double the number they helped in 2011/12.

Harriet is “twinned” with Andrew in Milton Keynes which is one of Labour’s target seats for the next General Election. The winner in Milton Keynes will likely decide which party takes up residence in Government at the next election.

Andrew Pakes, Labour Parliamentary Spokesman for Milton Keynes South, said: “I am always pleased to welcome Harriet to Milton Keynes to find out more about our great city. The MK Foodbank team does an amazing job helping families struggling to make ends meet or to get enough food.

“There has been a massive growth in food poverty as families struggle with higher living costs, lower wages, reduced working hours and welfare changes. I would encourage everyone to give what they can to help MK Foodbank and to support the Big Little Give.”

Adele Johnson, Asda’s Community Life Champion at Milton Keynes said: “We’re delighted to welcome Harriet Harman to the MK Food Bank collection especially at a time when families and individuals are increasingly feeling the squeeze on their household incomes. Asda recognise that times are tough for many of those in our local community and we are happy to do all we can to assist.”
