Help for families facing adversity

FAMILIES will benefit from services designed to improve interpersonal relationships, thanks to a new social enterprise in Broughton.

Evolving Families is a child and family psychology practice which provides clinical psychology services for those in need – from children and young people to expectant parents and whole family units.

Clinical director and consultant clinical psychologist, Dr Miriam Silver, set up the enterprise in September 2012.

Evolving Families aim to reduce psychological distress and improve the resilience of children, families and adults who have experienced adversity – whether abuse, neglect, physical health conditions or other life stressors.

Dr Miriam Silver said: “Through the enterprise I am able to be creative and work in the best way to help people – the culture is different to that in the NHS.

“The practice is growing – we will be working with Milton Keynes Hospital to support people with diabetes and focusing more on perinatal care, supporting expectant and new mums.

“It is a very exciting time.”

Until 2011, Miriam ran the NHS service for looked after and adopted children in Northamptonshire’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.

She now holds this post in an honorary capacity while acting as an independent court expert in family court cases and focusing on Evolving Families.

Miriam is passionate about working to support parents.

Alongside Miriam is Jen Wilson, an associate psychologist.

People may self refer or encounter Evolving Families through social services, MK Hospital or their GP, with some treatment subsidised.

The team are trained to offer therapy to children and teens, adults, parents and carers.

Clients are not required to meet the diagnostic criteria for any specific mental health disorder to access Evolving Families’ services – experiencing distress linked to parenthood is enough.

Although early intervention and preventative work is preferred, they believe it is never too late to make a positive change.
