High Speed Rail plans could be set to go even faster

MP Iain Stewart has welcomed the HS2 Plus report which suggests more trains could be running from London to Euston.

The report was compiled by HS2 chairman Sir David Higgins who said overcrowding at Milton Keynes Central station will be solved by the proposed high speed network as the number of trains running from MK to London could almost double.

Mr Stewart, MP for Milton Keynes South is also PPS to the Secretary of State for Transport. He said: “I welcome Sir David’s report, there are some very strong recommendations the government will ask both HS2 and Network Rail to look at in more depth.

“It is vital we invest in projects such as this. Without it commuters from MK and along the West Coast Main Line are likely to have to queue for several trains before they can even get onboard.

“This is something nobody wants to happen and, as the report suggests, Milton Keynes will experience more services as a result of HS2 freeing up the line to London Euston. In addition to possible extra services the city is putting in a bid for the proposed HS2 skills academy which would bring yet another plus of HS2 to Milton Keynes.”

The report also suggests trains could run from London to Crewe by 2027 rather than just Birmingham by 2026.

Andrew Pakes, Labour Parliamentary Candidate for MK South, said: “This is another welcome boost to the fledging HS2 network. It is essential we reboot our rail network for the 21st century with a new north-south line at the core of plans.

“The Higgins report also calls for the extensive redevelopment of Euston station to put it on a par with Kings Cross St Pancras in terms of services and connections.”

Sir David was quoted in Railnews this week. He said: “At stations such as Milton Keynes and Northampton, it is increasingly likely that commuters at some stage will have to queue before they get on a train, with the resulting impact on end-to-end journey times and work/life balance. There is no sign of the rise in demand weakening, not least because the alternative is to join an already congested road network.”
