Hilary Benn to visit MK tomorrow
Hilary Benn
LEADING Labour politician, Hilary Benn, is due to visit the city tomorrow.
The shadow communities secretary will be meeting with councillors and campaigners concerned about the Government’s bedroom tax.
Council tenants could end up paying over £700 more a year just for having a spare bedroom under new Government plans that come into force in April.
Mr Benn will be speaking to Milton Keynes Labour Party’s first borough conference, which is being held in Kiln Farm.
He will be joined by Stevenage council leader, Councillor Sharon Taylor, Milton Keynes councillors and supporters from across the borough for the one-day event.
Labour and Co-operative Parliamentary Spokesman for Milton Keynes South, Andrew Pakes, said: “I am really pleased Hilary Benn has agreed to come to the city to help push our campaign against the Government’s unfair bedroom tax.
“The bedroom tax will hit some of our lowest paid families by £700 a year on average.
“We should be pulling together to ensure that any cuts fall fairly across those with the broadest shoulders rather than targeting low-paid families and those with caring responsibilities.
“Ironically, these cuts will come in just as the Government cuts the 50p tax rate for millionaires.”
