Hospital boss knows where improvements can be made

He may have only been in charge of Milton Keynes Hospital for a month, but chief executive Joe Harrison has already spotted a few areas to improve.
After moving from Bedford Hospital earlier this year, Mr Harrison is beginning to get his teeth into his new role.
And having settled in, he is now set on making Milton Keynes Hospital one of the best in the country.
“Milton Keynes Hospital is a fantastic place to work,” he said. “It can provide excellent healthcare services to the population of Milton Keynes and beyond. We have to aspire to be a fantastic hospital, and I genuinely believe we can improve our care so that everyone says we are a great hospital.
“I think in some areas we know through the work of all the clinical discussions going on, we can deliver better services.
“The honesty of debate with the public, telling them that it’s not about money, it’s about getting the best care for people, it what needs to happen next.
“That’s what I’m really looking forward to. Most people will see this as a smokescreen to save money.”
Working alongside the incoming Clinical Commissioning Group, the hospital has already made changes to the way it operates by introducing a navigator on the door of A&E, showing people to the urgent care centre, or directing them back to their GP surgery for more appropriate treatment.
And helping the A&E department is something Mr Harrison sees as a priority.
He said: “I think we can support the A&E front door better, and people will agree with us. We want to keep improving. The staff here strive to do a great job day in, day out. If we can get to a place where we’re listening to the public and the population, we’ll make some great improvements. We have to keep challenging ourselves.”
“We have to treat the patient in the most appropriate way, to see the right doctor at the right time.
“We are not turning people away if they are in need. That’s not what this is about. We’re telling people that we can provide different ways of care whether it may be. It’s better for the healthcare system as a whole.
“It’s about keeping the patient where they feel most comfortable and will get the best outcomes.”
