Hospital chief in pledge to tackle elderly care rap

As Milton Keynes Hospital was this week branded among the worst in Britain for elderly patient care, the new chief executive has pledged there will be a dramatic improvement.

Joe Harrison started the £150,000-plus a year job last month – just before the Care Quality Commission dropped its latest bombshell.

The government watchdog body inspected elderly patient wards in 50 hospitals all over the country – and Milton Keynes came out bottom.

It was the only hospital to fail to meet all five required standards, including staffing levels, patient protection, patient respect and nutrition.

The MK inspections involved two OAP wards and were carried out last August. Since then both wards have passed an inspection by local clinical commissioners.

This week, as bosses made a public apology, Mr Harrison told the Citizen: “There are things we needs to improve and we are facing these challenges head on. We will not accept mediocrity and I am committed to changing things for the better.”

Mr Harrison also revealed he makes unscheduled visits to all the wards under his care.

“I have regular unannounced walkarounds so I can see what is happpening in the hospital for myself,” he told the Citizen.

To recruit extra eyes and ears, he is also encouraging Board members to make similar visits, he said.
