Hospital staffing probe

CONCERNS over staffing levels at Milton Keynes Hospital have prompted a city MP to ask questions in the House of Commons.

MP Iain Stewart, MK South, asked the Health minister, Norman Lamb what assurances he could give constituents that issues were being addressed, following a report by the Care Quality Commission.

The CQC report found the hospital was one of 17 to have below expected staffing levels. The report also found the hospital had failed on standards of care for patients and patient safety.

Mr Lamb replied by saying “substandard care simply will not be tolerated and has to be taken extremely seriously.”

He also said the trust involved was reviewing its staffing levels so necessary improvements can be made.

It had also started two-hourly checks, during which nursing staff check patients have everything they need to be both safe and comfortable.

He added: “There is clearly a big challenge and the trust has to meet it.”

Despite defending the quality of service in the hospital both Mr Stewart and Mark Lancaster, Milton Keynes North, admitted questions need to be answered.

Mr Lancaster, said: “My experience of Milton Keynes Hospital, like most of my constituents, has been an overwhelmingly positive one.

“That said, I take the criticisms of the CQC seriously as I know the hospital do and hope to be able to discuss the matter with senior management next week.”

Labour Parliamentary spokesman, Andrew Pakes said: “The hospital needs to come clean and let the public know what is going on with staffing.”
