Hundreds dig Archaeology Day at city library

HUNDREDS of city explorers got the chance to dig through the history of Milton Keynes at a special Archaeology Day

Last Saturday saw more than 300 people visit the Milton Keynes Library for a day filled with activities and talks on a wide range of subjects, from recent research at Stonehenge to the 20 year history of the Milton Keynes Archaeology Unit.

New this year was a hands-on archaeology workshop hosted by experts from Albion Archaeology and displays throughout the library helped to teach people about the borough’s rich heritage with stands from active local organisations such as the City Discovery Centre, Northamptonshire’s Community Landscape and Archaeology Survey Project and the Upper Nene Archaeological Society.

Archaeologist and excavator of Bancroft Roman villa Bob Zeepvat gave a talk reflecting on the illustrious 20 year history of Milton Keynes own archaeological unit.

They also welcomed a special guest and nationally respected archaeologist Professor Tim Darvill of Bournemouth University who was joint leader of the first team to excavate within Stonehenge for over 50 years,

Tim presented his ground-breaking research on the origin and meaning of this world renowned site under the enigmatic title: ‘Merlin’s Magic Circles: Stonehenge and the Use of the Preseli Bluestones’.

Milton Keynes Council’s Senior Archaeological Officer Nick Crank said: “Lots of people are now discovering that, far from being as dry as bones, archaeology is a fun and varied activity which covers a wide range of subjects.

“The Archaeology Day represents an opportunity for the public to find out more about the rich and varied heritage of the borough and the many new discoveries made each year as Milton Keynes grows and new estates are constructed.”
