A MAN who made and sold counterfeit DVDs via eBay has been jailed for ten months.

Raymond Arthus Boxall had pleaded guilty to counterfeiting vintage films, tv and radio programmes and comics. He was sentenced at Amersham Crown Court on Thursday, January 31.

The 65-year-old. from South Lawne, Bletchley, had been selling the films through his own website.

An investigation by Milton Keynes Trading Standards was started following a complaint from a member of the public, who said he had purchased 15 various DVDs as Christmas presents, 11 films and four TV programs.

However, due to their poor quality he could not give them as presents and he had contacted Trading Standards. All of these DVDs were confirmed as counterfeit.

Trading Standards established that Mr Boxall had sold DVDs via the internet market places eBay and iOffer, as well as selling over 5,000 DVDs through his own website. In all he received an income of over £49,000.

Sentencing Mr Boxall, Judge Joanna Cutts, made mention that people who infringe copyright undermine the business of reputable companies and put in jeopardy the employment of the people who work in such companies.

Head of the Regulatory Unit for Milton Keynes Council, Karen Ford, said: “Buying fake DVDs is not a victimless crime it causes serious damage to those working hard to earn a living in the film and TV industries as well as those businesses selling legitimate DVDs.

“Trading Standards will always look to take action to protect the rights of the consumer and support legitimate traders.”
