A man has been arrested in connection with the investigation into the brutal murder of a 33-year-old MK Dons fan.

James Attfield, 33, of East Bay, Colchester, was found injured in Colchester Castle Park at 5.45am on Saturday morning.

Despite paramedics coming to his aid, he died from his injuries, caused during a ‘violent and frenzied’ attack which left him with 102 separate wounds on his arms, hands, back, neck and head.

A 38-year-old man from Colchester has today been arrested by Essex Police.

Earlier, James’s family appealed to the public for help in finding the killer of ‘a gentle young man’.

His mum Julie Finch was joined by her partner Vince Sellars, and two daughters, Ashlee, 18, and Joanne, 29.

Julie said: “James was in the process of rebuilding his life after a road traffic accident four years ago in which he suffered a severe brain injury. The effects of which left him with a weakness to the left side of his body which in turn affected his balance, his speech was also slightly affected and he suffered short term memory loss and these things obviously made him very vulnerable.

“Jim was very aware of his disabilities and avoided crowded places and situations where he could get injured again. Jim was always a bit of a loner but seemed happy with his own company. He enjoyed indulging in his passion for karaoke whenever he could. He loved football and was a supporter of MK Dons.

“Jim was well liked and polite - everyone always had a good word to say about him.

“I would ask the public for any information they may have that could help the police with their enquiries. This to me seems a senseless and frenzied attack on a gentle, vulnerable young man.

“Please, if anyone saw my son on Friday please come forward. Someone, somewhere knows something. No matter how insignificant you may think it is please inform the police. The maniac who killed my son is still out there.”
