Man dies after illegal rave on Duke's estate

Sam Rennie found dead at his Simpson flat after Woburn Abbey party

A young partygoer died after friends saw him take a cocktail of drugs and alcohol at an illegal rave on the Duke of Bedford's estate.

Former grammar school boy Sam Rennie, described as 'an absolute legend' by his mates, was among 3,000 revellers celebrating Halloween night in a disused shed at Wavendon Heath near Woburn Abbey.

After partying through Saturday night and part of last Sunday the unemployed 21-year-old returned to his Simpson flat on Monday and fell asleep.

The next day a friend called and found him "unresponsive" on his bed, an inquest opening at Milton Keynes heard on Friday.

"Mr Rennie had been to a rave in Woburn and was known to have taken a combination of various drugs as well as drink," said coroner's officer Christopher Townsend.

He said no drugs were found at the flat, where Sam lived alone, and there were no signs of third party involvement.

Toxicology tests are now being carried out to find out what drugs the former Royal Latin pupil had taken.

This week Bedfordshire police revealed they had received vague intelligence about the rave.

But they did not discoverwhere it was until 2am, by which time it was deemed too dangerous to move intoxicated people in the dark and wet.

Instead police monitored the party and ordered the organisers to leave at 11am on Sunday .

Ironically the previous night the same force had foiled another unlicensed rave, turning partygoers away from a warehouse just outside Luton.

The inquest into Sam's death was adjourned until March next year.

Meanwhile dozens of friends are expected to attend his funeral on Friday.

They have already set up a tribute page to 'The Legend' on Facebook, where one mourner wrote: "You were there for us until the end... We will love you and never let you go."
