Man taken to hospital after bungalow fire

A man was taken to hospital this morning after a fire broke out at a city bungalow.

Crews from Great Holm and Bletchley were called to the incident in Rushleys Close, Loughton, at 9.16am.

Watch Manager Dominic Smith from Great Holm Fire Station said: “The fire started in the bedroom and we are investigating the cause.

“The occupier initially tried to tackle the fire but was helped out of the bungalow by a neighbour who heard the smoke alarm and saw the smoke.”

The bedroom was badly damaged and the bungalow was smoke-logged.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to put out the fire and a large fan to clear the smoke. They gave the man oxygen at the scene and he was taken to hospital by paramedics from South Central Ambulance Service.

Dominic said: “The neighbour did really well to get him out and we hope he is on the way to a full recovery.

“Our advice to anyone discovering a fire in their home is to get out, stay out and call 999 rather than to try to tackle it and risk serious injury.”

Firefighters will carry out a free safety check in your home, giving fire safety advice and fitting free smoke alarms where needed. Ring 01296 744477 or email cs@bucksfire.gov.uk to book one.
