Passengers from Milton Keynes will be taken on a shopping trip to Salisbury in style when they board a steam train next month.
On Thursday May 29, The Cathedrals Express steam train, lead by A4 class locomotive 61009 Bittern, will leave Milton Keynes at approximately 8.35am and unusually will take a direct route, skirting the edge of West London before turning south west through Surrey, Hampshire and on to Salisbury.
The Steam Dreams chairman, Marcus Robertson, said: “To be able to travel directly from Milton Keynes via London to Salisbury is extremely rare by train, let alone by steam.
“Passengers can sit back and relax in our elegant 1950s and ‘60s carriages, as Bittern, which was at the centre of celebrations last summer of Mallard’s world steam record in 1938 when it achieved 126 mph, takes the burden to this stunning Cathedral City – perhaps not reaching such speeds, but nevertheless it promises to be a thrilling journey and for those in Premier and Pullman, a fine dining experience.”
Once in Salisbury, there will be several hours to explore the medieval city, with its historic streets and alleyways, charming half-timbered buildings, pretty shopping streets and one of the country’s finest cathedrals. Passengers may also like to wander through the nearby water meadows immortalised by Constable.
For this memorable trip on board The Cathedrals Express, passengers have an opportunity to travel in four classes ranging from Premium Standard at £99 where they are seated at tables for four, with white tablecloths and complimentary tea and coffee at their seats, right up to Pullman Style Dining at £239 per person where they enjoy a two course champagne breakfast or brunch and a five course dinner on the return. The train will also be picking up passengers along the route at Berkhampsted, Watford Junction and West Brompton before heading south west to Salisbury.
The Cathedrals Express will return to Milton Keynes on Thursday, August 28, for a special trip to Carlisle via the world famous Settle and Carlisle railway. Anyone interested in travelling on The Cathedrals Express should call the booking office on 01483 209888 or visit www.cathedralsexpress.co.uk.
