Milton Keynes to be honoured with its own official Monopoly

Milton Keynes is being honoured with its very own official Monopoly - and your favourite local paper is in the running for a place on the board!

Following Facebook campaigns, the town has been recognised by the game that first hit the shop shelves back in 1935 - and the news has already been hailed as a tourism boost.

The public now have the chance to vote for the 22 property landmarks that will be featured in place of London streets and MK Citizen has already received votes to be included.

Many of the Community Chest and Chance cards are being customised too, with plans to fine players for merely paying a visit to Luton.

Landmarks that could feature on the board include Milton Keynes’ roundabouts (as it has more roundabouts per square mile than anywhere else in the UK), Snozone, the theatre, the football club or one of the entertainment complexes.

Steven Gordon-Wilson, chief executive officer of Destination Milton Keynes, said: “For many years has the world needed the ‘chance’ to slide their Top Hat onto Midsummer Boulevard and build a hotel -and the opportunity to benefit from MK’s blossoming Community Chest!

“Now our time has come. I’m just not sure how you’ll fit so many circular roundabouts into a square game board - but I can’t wait to find out.

“That’s certainly Sunday afternoons sorted in Milton Keynes’ homes for the foreseeable future.

“What a great accolade for the city and tourism boost. Well done MK!”

Dan Taylor, head of Monopoly Development at Winning Moves UK, said: “We’re delighted to be producing this official version of Monopoly based on the most popular loved landmarks of Milton Keynes.

“We have been told this is an honour for the city.”

Mr Taylor will be formally making the announcement today on Snozone’s ski slopes, alongside The Mayor of Milton Keynes, Councillor Brian White, Steven Gordon-Wilson, Chief Executive Officer of Destination Milton Keynes and Snozone customer service manager Melanie Pell.

Following the official announcement, voting lines will immediately open, culminating on Love MK Day, which is Thursday, May 1, when they will close.
