Morrisons axe 2,600 jobs as part of ‘management modernisation’

A total of 2,600 people will lose their jobs because of plans to ‘modernise’ the way Morrisons is managed, it has been announced today.

In what has been described as a ‘simplified management structure’ the supermarket will bring together department managers and supervisor positions into a single and smaller tier of team managers.

But Morrisons, which has a shop based in Westcroft District Centre, is refusing to confirm which stores will suffer from the mass redundancies.

“This is the right time to modernise the way our stores are managed,” said Morrisons chief executive Dalton Philips.

“These changes will improve our focus on customers and lead to simpler, smarter ways of working.

“We know that moving to the new management structure will mean uncertainty for our colleagues and we will be supporting them through the process.”

They claim the changes will modernise the way stores are managed with the aim of reducing in-store management tiers, simplifying responsibilities and improving customer service.

This new structure was trialled by the company, which is said to have “led to stronger performance and colleagues appreciated the clearer lines of responsibility.”

Implementing the new store structure would bring together department managers and supervisor positions into a single and smaller tier of team managers.

From this group Morrisons is proposing to promote 1,000 into new duty manager roles to strengthen the senior management team in each store. Hours would also be re-invested in customer-facing jobs on the shop floor.

Some Morrisons stores currently have seven tiers between the shop floor and the store manager.

This year, 1,000 jobs will be created in Morrisons M local convenience stores and an additional 3,000 in new supermarkets.
