New chapter in library dispute

LIBRARIES in Milton Keynes are no longer under the threat of closure, according to the new cabinet member.
The new Conservative administration has moved quickly to ensure the future of the city’s libraries by launching a new public consultation to discuss the future of the service.
This will involve making savings and efficiencies within the service in the coming years.
People are being invited to contribute their ideas for a report which will go to cabinet later this year.
Stony Stratford Library made national headlines when it launched its campaign to have customers withdraw every book from its shelves in a bid to prove the value of the service to the council.
Councillor David Hopkins, cabinet member responsible for libraries, has however said that the council is no longer looking to close any libraries in Milton Keynes.
Mr Hopkins campaigned to save Woburn Sands library, which was also under threat.He said: “This is no longer about closing libraries, that is no longer an option – this is about working with local people to see how best we can take the service forward to meet ever changing demands and challenges.
“We want to take this opportunity to engage our citizens in helping plan the future of our library service.
“This is an exciting opportunity for people to get involved in the future development of libraries in Milton Keynes and I’m sure there will be a wide diversity of views expressed.”
The newly formed group will be asked to participate in a series of workshops in June and July which will form an important part of the Library Review, as well as providing a stimulating and rewarding experience for all those involved.
