Popular golf club
on course to re-open

WINDMILL Hill Golf Club is set to re-open, just two months after the company running the course went into liquidation.

The announcement came from Milton Keynes Council which aims to re-open next month.

A council spokesman said: “We are keen to re-open the golf course and associated facilities as soon as possible, and are aiming for next month when – hopefully – the weather will show signs of improving.

“We have been busy working behind the scenes and will shortly be appointing a golf course manager, along with a ground maintenance contractor.”

In mid-December the council received notice from the liquidators after a meeting with the club’s creditors that Golf Course Management Ltd, under a 150-year lease from the council, was going into liquidation.

The council had hoped that the handover of the lease would be quick and easy meaning there was no loss of service to the public.

However the council said this was rejected by the management company and then the liquidators.

The news to re-open the course is good news for campaigners who had worked tirelessly to prevent the development of 89 houses on the site.

Councillor Elaine Wales, who represents the Whaddon ward and who worked on the campaign, said: “I am glad to learn that Milton Keynes Council is in the process of sorting out all the administration concerning season tickets and monthly passes.

“The Windmill Hill Golf Course is one of the best public courses in the area. Lots of time and money was spent defending the planning decision not to build on the site.

“I think that the right decision was made. I hope all users of the course will continue to play there when it re-opens, and many new players will enjoy the course.

“The long term facilities are best secured by a leisure trust such as Hertsmere Leisure which currently runs Bletchley Leisure Centre among others. They will invest all profit back into the facility rather than to shareholders.”
