Road fixers to get city out of the rut

Council mobilises to repair thousands of potholes across grid network

Pothole patch-up squads have been deployed across the city on a 1.25 million mission to fix snow and ice-ravaged roads.

Milton Keynes Council says it has tripled its repair workforce in a bid to clear the worst of the damage on the grid and main estate roads over the next two months.

It recently ordered an 0.5 per cent 'road tax' as part of council tax demands to raise almost half-a-million pounds towards the bill.

The big purge on potholes will see long stretches of road re-surfaced so that "repairs may not be needed in those areas again for several years."

Council cabinet member for transport Councillor Alan Mallyon said: "This was the worst winter for 30 years for creating potholes with there being a succession of freeze-thaw, freeze-thaw.

"Potholes have been appearing as fast as we have been repairing them."

Council highways manager Ian McGregor said it would be targeting the busiest roads and some of the estates worst affected.

Already the pothole platoons have repaired stretches of road on the A509 near Newport Pagnell and on V3 Fulmer Street between Portway and Childs Way.

In the pipeline are repairs to Aylesbury Street and Watling Street, Bletchley; High Street, Olney; Station Road, Newport Pagnell; Aylesbury Street and Church Street, Wolverton; Buckingham Road, Central Milton Keynes, Glovers Lane, Old Groveway, Pitfields, Skeldon Gate, Water Eaton Road and Waterside Peartree Bridge.

The council is urging anyone spotting potholes to let their environmental services team know on 01908 252625.

The Citizen will be taking a close interest in the repair programme, regularly updating progress.
