The Bletchley-born lad leapt 8.26m at a collegiate meeting in Albuquerque in New Mexico over the weekend. The 29-year-old, who lives in Woburn, has been training in the United States.

He beat Chris Tomlinson’s previous best of 8.18m, set in Stuttgart in February 2008.

Rutherford jumped the record distance in the second round after beginning the competition with 7.96m.

He then fouled his third round effort.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, the long jumper tweeted to his fans: “SMASH! SMASH, BOOM! And and another SMASH. Everyone that follows me will be asleep. Buuuut. Another national record 8.26 indoors”.

Last month, Rutherford was presented with a miniature statue of himself in honour of his sporting achievements by MK Council.
