Sign up to 10k race and spread some warmth to help elderly
SHOCKING statistics have shown that even in the 21st century old people still die from the effects of cold weather.
In fact latest figures for Milton Keynes show that between 2007 and 2010, 88 people aged 65 and over died due to the effects of the cold.
But help is at hand with charity Age UK organising fundraising events to help raise vital funds for vulnerable older people this winter.
Its popular Age UK Wrap Up and Run 10k, which launched last year, comes to Willen Lake in Milton Keynes on Sunday, February 24. Open to all abilities, this flat, friendly, chip-timed race is the perfect New Year’s running challenge.
BBC Radio presenterLiz Kershaw is backing the campaign and calling on runners to sign up to the event – part of a national series of 10km and 2km fundraising runs taking place in February and March.
The race is ideal for fun runners and joggers as well as serious runners looking to achieve a new personal best.
Participants will be raising funds for Age UK’s Spread the Warmth campaign, which aims to make winter warmer for thousands of people in later life during the colder months.
Nationally the campaign tackles the shocking fact that as many as 25,000 older people could die needlessly this winter because of the cold. That’s around 200 preventable deaths a day.
Liz said: “This winter we’re trying to keep the legacy of the Olympics alive so I’d love people in the area to start warming up for the Age UK Wrap up and Run event.
“And you don’t have to be a budding Mo Farrah to take part. It’s open to people of all ages and abilities and the money raised will make a huge difference to people in later life who need our support.”
Paul Farthing, fundraising director at Age UK, said: “We are really excited to be launching our first 10km in Milton Keynes after the successful launch of our Wrap Up and Run series last year.
“We hope to see lots of walkers, joggers and runners, whatever their age or ability, across Milton Keynes wrapping up and taking part to help us make a real difference to people in later life – it’s a great way to get out and exercise.
“At this time of year Age UK’s winter services provide a vital lifeline to many older people locally in Milton Keynes so please sign up today to help us prevent needless suffering this winter.”
Age UK is working together with local charity Age UK Milton Keynes to ensure funds raised by the Wrap up and Run 10k event will support vital local services for older people living in the town, as well as Age UK’s national projects.
Age UK Milton Keynes offers a range of different services including home visits, home from hospital support and a handyman service which carries out free energy assessments of people’s homes.
The charity also supplies draught proofing and energy saving devices free of charge and advises on loft and cavity wall insulation.
The 10km events cost £16 (£14 UK affiliated) to enter and are open to anyone who would like to run, jog or walk the 10km route.
