Sophie meets her helicopter heroes

Air Ambulance visit to Newton Longville School

Air Ambulance visit to Newton Longville School

A LITTLE girl whose life was saved by the Air Ambulance charity was paid a flying visit by her rescuers – in her own school playground.

Delighted pupils at Newton Longville watched the heroes in a helicopter land on the school field specially to greet eight-year-old Sophie Hughes.

Sophie suffered serious head injuries when she was hit by a car as she walked home from school four weeks ago.

The traffic queues that built up as the youngster lay unconscious in the road made it difficult for a conventional ambulance to get through.

But the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance crew arrived within minutes and flew Sophie off to specialists at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital in time to receive vital treatment.

She quickly bounced back to health and returned to school just two weeks after her accident.

Though she still suffers from memory loss, she clearly remembers the significance of her air ambulance rescue.

“Sophie has been incredible,” said a school spokesman. “Everyone is amazed at her recovery and we are all so grateful to the air ambulance.”

The 200-pupil school appealed to parents and friends to donate to TVCAA, which relies upon charity events and public donations to run.

Last week Sophie presented the crew with the resulting cheque for £551.46, and in return she received an air ambulance teddy bear – complete with a bandaged head.

The school spokesman added: “All the children had an absolutely brilliant time.

“They were allowed to look all around the helicopter and they listened to the crew explain about the phenomenal work they do.”
