Road safety authority defends new camera on V6
Police are backing increased use of speed cameras across the city to milk cash from motorists, says a councillor.
Loughton Tory Don Hoyle has attacked installation of a new dual-purpose camera outside stadium:mk on the V6 that will trap drivers jumping traffic lights and those speeding.
He believes the accident record there does not justify the move and is "designed to raise cash, not to contribute to road safety."
He said: "The public will be confirmed in their belief that the government is cynically raising money, aided and abetted by police who apparently have nothing but contempt for the motorist."
He warned the move will create "utter contempt for authority".
And he's worried about "social manipulation" aimed at making driving "so awful" residents would be forced to travel by bus.
He said city Conservatives would introduce "fair" ways of improving road safety which free up police to catch "real criminals".
The new camera – a yellow-topped pole – has recently been installed as part of a three-month trial by the Home Office.
Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership, through which police, councils and courts fund accident-reduction measures, is supporting the pilot scheme.
Spokesman Dan Campsall said no drivers would be brought to book during the test period and no decision had been made as to whether the V6 camera would remain in place permanently.
Milton Keynes Council cabinet member for transport Douglas McCall said: "I find it appalling that Cllr Hoyle appears to support motorists who jump red lights or exceed the speed limit."
