POLICE have said an incident involving a Barnsley player and a Milton Keynes Dons fan on Saturday was not of a racist nature.

Officers had been investigating a third party report of an alleged racist offence by a fan during Dons’ 3-1 FA Cup fifth round defeat to the Yorkshire club.

A police spokesman said: “On Saturday, police officers interviewed both the spectator reported to have made the offensive gesture, and the alleged victim, a player with the Barnsley team. Further witnesses were interviewed yesterday.

“Following these enquiries, officers have found no evidence that this was a racist incident.

“Thames Valley Police is taking no further action in this case and any action with regard to the spectator will be at the discretion of the football club.”

A statement released on MK Dons’ club website, said: “Following the completion of Thames Valley Police’s investigation, Milton Keynes Dons FC will now conduct its own inquiry into an alleged incident involving a spectator and the Barnsley team bench which took place at stadiummk during the FA Cup match on Saturday.

“Milton Keynes Dons Football Club encourages supporters to express their passion and support for their team at stadiummk in a secure and enjoyable environment. The club is therefore committed to preventing people from behaving in a manner likely to jeopardise the safety or enjoyment of others, or to bring discredit on the Club or the community of Milton Keynes.

“The club will not tolerate abuse, of any nature, inside or outside of stadiummk and seeks to eliminate unacceptable or anti-social behaviour.”
